Edwine Nabahirwa
She is a passionate and driven researcher from Uganda currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Vision, in Shanghai, China, specializing in object detection. My journey in technology and research has been fueled by a deep curiosity about the intersection of computer science and real-world challenges. I believe in using technology to solve complex problems and contribute to society, which is why I chose to focus on computer vision and its potential to make a meaningful impact on environmental and industrial challenges.
My love for Africa, especially my motherland Uganda, deeply inspires my ambitions. Uganda’s vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and resilient people remind me of the potential our continent holds. Whether through education, technology-driven solutions, or initiatives that uplift lives, I want to be part of Africa’s journey toward a brighter future.

PhD in Computer Vision (Ongoing), Shanghai Ocean University, China (2022 – to date)
My current research focuses on object detection, aiming to develop more efficient and robust models that can perform well in challenging environments such as underwater.
Master’s in Computer Science and Technology, Shanghai Ocean University, China (2019 – 2022)
My Master’s journey gave me a deeper understanding of AI, machine learning, and churn predictions in telecommunication, which are the building blocks of my current research in computer vision.
Bachelor’s in Information Systems, Kyambogo University, Uganda (2015 – 2018)
My academic journey began with a strong foundation in information systems, where I learned the fundamentals of technology and how to apply it in real-world business contexts.

Professional Journey
Microsoft, Technical Support Engineer, Shanghai, China (2022 Feb-2022 Nov). I worked as a Technical Support Engineer in the Forum Department. My responsibilities included providing technical support for Office 365 applications such as SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams for Business, and Microsoft Forms etc., on Microsoft online support platform.

Business
Beyond research, I am also a business-oriented individual. Living in China, one of the world’s largest business hubs, has given me a deep understanding of how business works, the opportunities that arise, and the importance of innovation in business. I am passionate about entrepreneurship and enjoy exploring various business ideas, whether through startups or investment opportunities. Since 2021, I have been shipping products on a small scale, including clothes, shoes, and electronics, especially mobile phones, leveraging my understanding of logistics and market trends. I still actively engage in this business and aspire to become a very prominent person in the business world. For anyone looking to ship products from China to Uganda, I am committed to providing reliable and honest services. This business mindset complements my research and keeps me motivated to think about technology not only as a tool for solving problems but also as a way to create value in the world.
